Book Club
Elementary (Ages 6-10)
We will study a new children’s novel over the course of three or four weeks; each novel will be selected because it is canonical and has an accompanying film (that they could watch at home, though I may rent a library space for them to watch it together if there is interest). Each week, we will discuss literary elements (plot, character, POV, theme, conflict, setting, tone, etc), and at the end of our review of each novel, we will have a book “party” to celebrate all that we have learned and present projects/memorization/homework/book reviews (level of depth is fluid in my class based on each student’s needs–they will be given options and opportunities on each book to dig a little deeper outside of class, though this is optional).
This fall, we will be reading three or four of the following books: Peter Pan, Holes, Matilda, Harriet the Spy, The Tale of Despereaux, Ella Enchanted, etc. (Selections will be finalized before the first day of class).
Overall, students will learn to evaluate and identify literary devices while discussing the novels that we cover in class. They will also have the opportunity to work on expanding their vocabulary, memorization, and critical thinking skills both in class and in optional homework.
